It’s hard to believe that The Penguin has already reached its midseason point.
The beloved Max mob drama will deliver a scant eight episodes for its first (and possibly only) season, which is a bit of a bummer.
But we suppose you can’t expect any series to keep up such a breakneck pace forever.
A new trailer for the show’s second season debuted at New York Comic Con this week.
And it looks like the alliance between Sofia and Oz will rather be short-lived.
“So who’s got the power in this city? The Falcones? The Maronis? Why not us?” Oz asks in a voice-over.
“He betrayed me, the daughter of the Falcone don,” Sofia says of her former driver.
“I want Oz to feel pain,” she continues. “I need him to suffer for what he’s done.”
Yes, while the conflict between Gotham’s top crime families will no doubt continue, it looks like the remainder of the season will focus largely on the clash between Oz and Sofia.
And based on the scenes of destruction throughout Gotham, it seems that the battle between these aspiring overlords will take quite a toll.
The Penguin himself, Colin Farrell, made an appearance at the opening day of this year’s con.
“Human beings want to distinguish themselves until you’re special in a way society says isn’t cool,“ Farrell said of his character.
”He’s had this sense of otherness imposed upon him and made to feel different in all these ways. He was always going to end up losing his mind at some point.
“Ascension into power is a descension into madness that was born of the pain he’s experienced all his life. The power vacuum is such a raw opportunity to rise. The worst thing you can do is laugh at him.”
Well, probably the absolute worst thing you could do would be violently murder him — which is exactly what Sofia promises to accomplish in the trailer.
As we said earlier, it’s not easy to keep raising the stakes week after week. But it looks like the Penguin might manage exactly that.
There was a time when it was tough to imagine where the show could go next.
In particular, last week’s episode — which focused on Sofia’s stint in Arkham Asylum — seemed like it would be tough to top.
But the promise of an all-out war between two of the most compelling characters on TV has us very excited about this season’s second half.
What do you think, TV fanatics? Can The Penguin continue to outdo itself?
