The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash-tests and evaluates vehicles throughout the year, and it recently released its final list of Top Safety Pick award winners for the 2024 calendar year. This round of winners brings the number of Top Safety Pick + awards to 48 and Top Safety Picks to 56.
Raul Arbelaez, the vice president of IIHS’ vehicle research center, said, “I think this year there was a big push because this is the last year where our original moderate overlap frontal crash will be included in the criteria. Starting next year, moving forward, only our newest frontal moderate overlap crash test will be included.”
The newest IIHS Top Safety Pick + awards went to:
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Infiniti QX60
- Mazda CX-70
- Mazda CX-70 PHEV
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class
- Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
- Rivian R1S
- Subaru Forester
- Toyota Tundra Crew Cab
- Volvo XC90 PHEV
Top Safety Pick winners include:
- Audi Q8
- Ford F-150 crew cab and extended cab
- Infiniti QX80
- Kia K4
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class
- Nissan Kicks
- Toyota Corolla sedan
- Toyota Crown Signia
The Subaru Forester and Toyota Tundra received testing earlier this year and failed to earn a Top Safety Pick designation, but updates over the last few months have helped them grab top honors in the late-year testing. Arbelaez told Automotive News that GM did not have any Top Safety Pick awards in 2024, though the Cadillac Lyriq came close, missing an award due to stumbles in the headlight evaluations.
