Sweet Magnolias returns on February 6. The third season ended in July 2023, meaning even diehard fans may want to rewatch some scenes before the new season begins.
It’s been 18 months since Sweet Magnolias Season 3 premiered, and the wait for Season 4 has seemed endless.
We understand if you need a refresher on the key points of the season.
Dana Sue and Ronnie’s relationship was the season’s highlight as they renewed their vows in front of the entire community in the season finale.
Their genuine, hard-earned love inspired Annie to break up with Jackson and lean on Ty, who had always been there for her.
Maddie and Bill ended Season 3 in a better place, but their children still don’t know that Issac is related to them.
Additionally, while watching Cal and Maddie court each other again was cute, it also seemed like a step backward since many fans thought they would be engaged, if not married, by now.
Let’s review everything you should know before Sweet Magnolias Season 4.
The Magnolias Fought Over Helen’s Decisions Affecting the Core Relationship of the Series
The most brutal storyline was watching Maddie and Dana Sue fight with Helen over her choice to date Ryan. Those three are the heart of the series, and nothing seemed the same while they fought.
Let’s face it. Helen and Erik were the superior match, but Helen had to try with her old sweetheart, and Maddie and Dana Sue should have let her make some mistakes before butting in.
Once those accusations flew, Helen grew offended and left town.
While the women missed each other, they were too stubborn to admit it until Maddie wrote the first apology letter.
It was refreshing to see even strong friendships have cracks, but hopefully, we won’t endure that again.
Thankfully, Helen and Ryan broke up, and the ice between Helen and Erik started to thaw as they gazed at each other at the wedding. There’s hope yet.
When the women reconciled, they decided to use Dana Sue’s inheritance from Ms. Frances to start a foundation to help others.
We didn’t see much of it, so hopefully, that will be a more significant arc in the upcoming season.
Ronnie’s Sister Tried to Destroy Dana Sue’s Happiness but Failed
At the beginning of Sweet Magnolias Season 3, it was revealed that the mystery woman who wanted to hurt Dana Sue was Ronnie’s sister, Kathy.
She held a grudge against her since she thought she should have inherited Sullivan’s, but it went to Dana Sue.
Kathy was not an entertaining villain but a menacing one. She wrecked Annie’s 16th birthday party, poached Erik for her new restaurant when he was vulnerable, and vandalized Sullivan’s. I’m unsure why Ronnie would ever forgive her.
The only good part of that storyline was it showed how much Ronnie loved Dana Sue and Annie. Hopefully, we will see intense family moments in Season 4, too.
Ronnie grew tired of his sister’s vengeance and wrote her a check, hoping she’d leave.
That almost stopped the vow renewal because he used the wedding fund, and the Magnolias and the rest of the community hosted a beautiful celebration for Dana Sue and Ronnie.
Bill made the ultimate sacrifice, apologized for hurting Maddie, and encouraged Kathy to make amends to her family as well. The two left town together, hopefully forever.
Maddie and Cal Reevaluated Their Relationship
Poor Cal. The series really destroyed his character.
He’s never had problems with anger before, but he punched someone in Sullivan’s. Naturally, that worried Maddie, but her children were more worried about how things would change since they all adored Cal.
No one could prove it, but it reeked of Mary Vaughn sending that man to trigger Cal so he would lose his job and Maddie. Initially, they took a step back to find themselves individually.
While I thought that was unneeded, I appreciated seeing more male bonding among the guys and the cute flirting as Cal and Maddie started dating again.
Obviously, they still loved each other but needed to rebuild their foundation slowly. Now that they have, hopefully, they’ll get the happiness they deserve.
The Teens Made Important Life Decisions
While the core focus was the Magnolias, the third season also focused on the teenagers as they matured. Annie grew up and realized that sneaking around with Jackson wasn’t worth it.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 10 gave fans hope as Ty comforted Annie and held her hand. Could Season 4 be when their relationship shifts from close friends to something more? We’ve enjoyed the slow burn but now want it to sizzle.
When Cece’s parents moved out of state, she moved in with Helen. Heather Headley previously joked that they gave her a teenager instead of giving Helen the baby she wanted.
However, CeCe learned a great deal from Helen, so this was an entertaining addition that we hope to see more of.
We loved that Annie, CeCe, and Lily became friends instead of rivals. Annie always wanted friends like the Magnolias; now, that wish may have been granted.
