Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14 Was All About Standing Up For Yourself, Except For That Silly Archer Arc

Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14 offered a crash course on the importance of standing up for yourself.

Hannah had to deal with an overly concerned mother while Sharon stood up to an inspector who seemed hell-bent on finding reasons to shut down Gaffney Medical Center.

Archer, however, engaged in the age-old trope of telling deep truths while high as a kite. What the heck, Chicago Med?

Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14 Offered An Annoying Mother, Then Suddenly Made Her Sympathetic

I was all set to be aggravated by Arianna’s mother.

She kept interfering with Hannah’s examination because she thought her 12-year-old was too young to hear about things like menstruation and pregnancy.

I get wanting to protect your kids, but this was ridiculous.

Hannah is an OBGYN. Of course, she’s going to ask these very basic questions!

Plus, the mother had asked for a female doctor, and in my mind, at least, that implied that she expected her daughter to have a women’s health issue — which meant that Hannah was going to ask about these topics that made Arianna’s mother so uncomfortable.

(George Burns Jr/NBC)

All that said, as soon as Arianna became severely ill, her mother’s attitude changed.

She agreed to the pelvic exam right away and began trusting Hannah to do her job.

After Hannah saved Arianna’s life, her mother took responsibility for being so overprotective that Arianna was scared to tell her that she had gone swimming or used a tampon, which is what almost killed her.

I loved the scenes between Hannah and Arianna’s mother at the end.

Arianna’s Mother: When I was Arianna’s age, some things happened to me that shouldn’t have.

Hannah: I’m so sorry.

Arianna’s Mother: So when I had Arianna, I swore I would let her be a kid for as long as possible before the world got to her.

Despite how annoying she was for most of the episode, Arianna’s mother instantly became a sympathetic character.

(George Burns, Jr/NBC)

She wasn’t a monster. She wasn’t controlling for its own sake.

She wasn’t even censoring what her daughter was exposed to because she was super religious and thought sex was sinful, which is what I thought her issue was at first.

This woman had the best intentions in the world. She wanted to protect her baby from all the evil in the world… and it almost cost her everything.

It would have been tragic if Arianna had died because she was terrified to tell her mother she had used a tampon, and her mother realized that after it almost happened.

Good for her.

Chicago Med’s Health Inspector Was A Little Weird

I love the idea of a health inspector threatening to close down Gaffney for silly reasons.

Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14 had a winning storyline, but the inspector was strange.

While he was undercover at the beginning of the episode, he seemed to be a very COVID-conscious guy who always wears a mask. I was disappointed that aspect of his character was dropped — apparently it was part of his disguise.

I have gone to medical offices countless times only for the doctor to suddenly realize they’re not wearing a mask when they see me with one, so I would have loved a story about someone who wants to continue to mask and take precautions dealing with a health care facility that doesn’t prioritize masking.

I understood why Reed didn’t announce in advance that he was an inspector. That only leads to people scrambling to fix everything before he can see the problems.

His initial interaction with the staff was ridiculous, though. Forcing his way into a restricted area to complain that his case took more than an hour to call made him seem entitled.

(George Burns Jr/NBC)

I call BS on the idea that ERs have to see every patient within an hour of sign-in. We all wish that were the case, but come on.

Every hospital I’ve ever been to has signs in the ER telling people that if someone who came in after them has a more life-threatening emergency, they’re going to have to wait. Unfortunately, sometimes, that means camping out in the ER all night.

Does it suck when that happens? Yes. Is it a reason to shut a hospital down? Absolutely not.

The whole idea of shutdown makes little sense, considering that another major hospital in the same area just closed.

Where the heck are sick people supposed to go? You’d think they’d do everything to try to keep Gaffney open.

(George Burns, Jr/NBC)

Most of the so-called violations were things that should have been correctable instead of a reason to shut the place down.

Garbage cans not the exact distance apart they should be shouldn’t end a hospital’s ability to provide patient care. Come on!

The Archer Storyline on Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14 Left Me Scratching My Head

The Archer storyline was ridiculous.

  • Michelle Trachtenberg Dies: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl Star Was 39

I don’t understand why Archer took acid or any other drugs with those two seemingly stoned guys.

One moment he was examining them, the next he was high. They disappeared after they got him that way, too, as if they weren’t important to the story.

(George Burns, Jr/NBC)

While I had no use for this silly storyline, Archer telling Hannah how special she was might have made it worth it.

I’m not someone who ships Hannah/Archer, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it if done right, and this scene opened the door.

That said, Archer wandering around half-out of it did nothing for Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14, and it’s ridiculous that that might be what convinces the inspector to give them a proper rating.

A Rant About Ripley

Ugh, Ripley is still very much a part of Chicago Med Season 10.

(George Burns, Jr/NBC)

This guy has been nothing but trouble, and he’s busy practicing medicine while suspended.

His kiss with Lynne was predictable and expected, and true to form, immediately after she put the brakes on that, he tried to get Hannah to take him back.

I’m glad she had too much self-respect to say yes to that idea.

Hannah and Ripley have never been a great match, and now it’s clear she’d be better off on her own.

Ripley wants to go back to his street fighter days. He’s wanted that since before Sully died.

He can go be with Lynne if he wants, as long as he does it off-screen. Deal?

(George Burns, Jr/NBC)

Random Thoughts About Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 14

  • I’m glad the woman in Frost’s story came forward voluntarily. I wasn’t all that invested in this story, but the woman being willing to make her son take the fall for a shooting seemed cruel.
  • Did anyone else think the inspector was conducting a test when he left his notebook in plain sight for Maggie to read?
  • That business of the nurses all running to the bathroom to avoid the inspector was funny.
