De Berenkuil in Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Netherlands is known for its highly efficient infrastructure that allows bikers to have peace of mind navigating through traffic. In this case, car drivers will completely miss this spectacle as they drive above it.

Below a crossing for cars outside of Eindhoven University of Technology is a roundabout for bikers that is surrounded by captivating graffiti art. De Berenkuil, Dutch for “the bear pit,” became a canvas for the graffiti scene as it is the largest spot in the Netherlands where graffiti is legally allowed. Since 1997, the walls around the bike intersection comprise an open air museum for bikers and pedestrians to enjoy while passing through.

From 2010 to 2024, Step Into the Arena invited over 150 artists, both new and well-known, to gather in de Berenkuil for two days to showcase their art. This graffiti festival was held annually, and a new format is in consideration.
