Well, here we are. Donald Trump won the presidential election, and he’s wasting no time making good on a few of his laundry list of promises. Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy have been tapped to head the new Department of Government Efficiency. That’s DOGE, for those of you keeping track.
Trump’s announcement read (all weird capitalizations from the quote), “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”). Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the “Save America” Movement.
At this point, it’s important to note that there is already a Government Accountability Office, which handles many of the same things described in Trump’s announcement. So, we now have two departments tasked with basically the same things, a model of American efficiency. That said, DOGE’s task is to “cut waste,” and it sounds like the new administration wants to take a heavy-handed approach to slashing spending, regardless of the impact.
Trump believes that this effort will rival the Manhattan Project’s scale, but its time in operation is limited. DOGE is set to close after July 4, 2026. There’s a lot that can happen in that short time, however, as Musk has said he can cut trillions out of the federal budget.
