Ford Faces Up to a $165 Million NHTSA Fine for Slow Rearview Camera Recall

Ford issued the most recalls of any automaker in 2023, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is unhappy with the company’s timing for at least one of them. The government agency said it had determined that Ford was too slow in recalling vehicles with defective rearview cameras and noted that it had failed to provide all the information required.

That determination has led the NHTSA to fine The Blue Oval up to $165 million, its second-largest civil fine. NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said, “Timely and accurate recalls are critical to keeping everyone safe on our roads. NHTSA is committed to ensuring manufacturers comply with the laws designed to keep our roads safe. When manufacturers fail to prioritize the safety of the American public and meet their obligations under federal law, NHTSA will hold them accountable.”

The NHTSA’s fine starts with a $65 million upfront payment, and Ford could owe an additional $55 million if it fails to meet its obligations. The automaker will spend another $45 million on improvements to its recall processes.

Under the order, Ford must create safety data analytics infrastructure and an end-to-end document storage platform. The automaker must also build a testing lab for low-voltage electronics and devise a VIN-based tracking system to monitor vehicle components.

Ford will also have to review all of its recall actions from the past three years, assessing whether they were appropriately conducted and had the proper scope. A company rep said that it is committed to improving safety and noted that many updates are already underway.
