Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 12 Made Suprisingly Good Use Of What Sounded Like An Overused Trope

As much as I love Cooper crossovers on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, I wasn’t looking forward to this one.

Dead people appearing on TV shows usually mean either a dream sequence or some type of ridiculous ghostly visit (except on soap operas, where they turn out to be not so dead.)

I’m so happy I was wrong about this visit on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 12.

George Sr.’s Visit on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 12 Was Surprisingly Poignant

George Sr. visited Georgie during his fever dream while Georgie was resting after being sent home to recover from his cold.

The purpose of his visit was poignant enough.

Georgie was working through his guilt over not working when he was ill, and George Sr. berated him during the first dream sequence about how “weak” he was to take time off for illness.

But the sequence seemed similar to the last time Georgie saw his father before George Sr.’s death.

The whole family said goodbye to him in the kitchen that fateful morning on Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 12, not realizing they would never see him again.

That’s exactly where Georgie “saw” his father during the dream, making it doubly significant. It was almost as if he was working through his feelings about his father’s death, not just his own feelings about not being at work.

Georgie’s resistance to taking time off for illness came from his belief that his father never did, so a real man shouldn’t.

Connor: Maybe if your dad had taken time off when he was sick, he’d still be here.

Georgie: You don’t know what you’re talking about!

Even though he insisted that Connor was wrong when Connor said that overworking is what led to George Sr.’s early death, Georgie must have known on some level.

Otherwise, what was up with that zombie sequence that made me jump?

Dreams like this can have a million interpretations, but I think the deepest one is that Georgie has to outgrow his need for his father’s approval in order to become the father and husband he wants to be.

Sheldon’s brilliance always overshadowed Georgie’s abilities or accomplishments. The only way he got any attention was by being a football player who pushed himself too hard physically.

Taking care of himself when he was ill went directly against his father’s teachings, risking Georgie losing his father’s approval from beyond the grave. But to be effective in his life, he has to let †hat go.

Georgie’s Illness Helped Connor Bond With Him

Connor has had a special affinity for Georgie ever since Georgie was patient with him on a road trip on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7, but Connor’s been in the background during the last few episodes.

He made up for it on “Typhoid Georgie,” though.

Connor was an effective nurse for Georgie. He also stood up to him when Georgie tried to escape back to work while he was still ill.

Jim probably would have sent him back home, but it was important for Connor’s character that he insisted Georgie stay home.

Connor is often passive — one of the jokes on “Typhoid Georgie” was that he kept responding “Okay” when Georgie insisted he didn’t know what he was talking about.

It was a big deal for him to stop Georgie from going to work sick and making his illness worse, even if he did learn it mostly from Golden Girls.

Georgie’s Illness Was Incredibly Relatable In A Post-Covid World

Most of the time, I remember that Georgie’s story takes place during the early 1990s.

I almost forgot during Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 12, though. All of his symptoms were also COVID symptoms — something which didn’t even exist then.

Still, the debate over whether or not to work when sick and people not wanting to catch something from Georgie was extremely relatable in this post-COVID world.

Whether it’s COVID or a common cold, nobody wants to get sick because of someone else, so this story was super relatable.

Did Mandy’s Anxiety on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 12 Foreshadow A Deal-Breaking Problem For The Couple?

Every episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage seems to make me play “Guess Why Georgie and Mandy Eventually Break Up.”

Most of the early episodes suggested financial problems are to blame, but after Mandy’s stint as a substitute weather person, I’m not so sure.

Mandy was far more fulfilled and happy reporting the weather on local news than she’d been in months.

It’s obvious that she needs to find a way to pursue her original career path so that she doesn’t resent Georgie and Cici for taking her away from her dream.

Still, I can’t help thinking that Mandy’s eagerness to get back to reporting the weather will eventually lead to an insurmountable rift between her and Georgie.

Mandy was more worried about doing well at the job than about falling flat on her face.

Her anxiety that she would get a job in Houston and Georgie wouldn’t want to move seemed awfully specific.

It wasn’t lost on me, either, that Houston is where George, Sr. was going to move right before he had his fatal heart attack.

If Houston is where she gets a job offer, she could be right that Georgie won’t want to move — but it won’t be because he doesn’t want to be away from Mary and Missy.

That might be part of it, but I’d bet that Georgie has a superstitious belief that agreeing to go to Houston will be fatal because of the circumstances of his father’s death.
