The worst thing about Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is knowing the central relationship is doomed before the series even begins.
The Big Bang Theory locked in Georgie’s two divorces, so sooner or later, the young couple will implode.
That foreknowledge dampens the humor because it is impossible to miss the hints of heartbreak to come. On Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6, we got a huge insight into what will go wrong.
Georgie And Mandy Avoided A Trope-y Trap While Missing The Real Problem
The sitcom could have easily fallen into tired TV tropes once Georgie met an attractive woman who needed a flat tire.
There have been thousands of variations of sitcom plots involving cheating, even though it’s not a funny subject.
Early sitcoms could only feature the humorous misunderstanding version of the cheating trope, of course, but ever since Archie Bunker slept with that waitress on my least favorite episode of All In The Family, most sitcoms followed suit.
Fortunately, Georgie and Mandy didn’t do that. It wouldn’t have made sense for Georgie to cheat on Mandy when he’s so committed to making this marriage for the sake of the accidental baby work.
Plus, he probably knows how George Sr and Brenda’s fling on Young Sheldon hurt his parents’ marriage, which would make him not want to repeat the same mistake.
I’m equally thrilled that Mandy never once thought he was cheating.
It was so refreshing for an overworked wife who barely has any time alone with her husband to trust him when he said he wanted to go to church instead of assuming he was having an affair or trying to stop him from doing what he wanted to do.
I wouldn’t have blamed Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 if they had gone the misunderstanding route.
The idea of Georgie acting like he’s having an affair (dressing up, going to “church” every chance he gets, spending time with an attractive woman who he claims is only a friend) only for Mandy to discover he’s handing out business cards at a church group would have been pretty damn funny.
Still, that trope wore out its welcome about 200 sitcom appearances ago, so I’m glad that “A Regular Samaritan” skipped it.
Georgie using the church as a networking group was ridiculous, which was what made it so fun.
After all, what church would allow a member to use Bible study group as an opportunity to encourage everyone to buy tires from his shop?
Additionally, he turned the tables on the so-called prosperity church he was attending when he did that.
These churches are often scams. Parishioners are encouraged to show their faith by donating all their worldly possessions to the church and are promised they will receive back what they put in tenfold.
In these types of churches, the only one who gets rich is usually the leader, who lives large off all those donations while the givers go without necessities because of their sacrifice.
But this prosperity church was all about letting Georgie fleece them instead, which was deliciously ironic.
The Church Plot Was Related To The Real Problem: Money
I used to think that the reason Georgie and Mandy’s marriage doesn’t last is that the age difference is insurmountable in the end.
Mandy is often embarrassed by her younger husband or thinks his behavior is immature, while Georgie jumps at the chance to be with people his own age despite his loyalty to Mandy.
No matter how much they love each other, they stay together in part out of obligation to the new life they created, and that’s always going to create doubt and resentment, at least to an extent.
However, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6 demonstrated that that wasn’t the biggest problem the young couple faces.
The issue for them, as it is for many couples, is money — or, more specifically, not having enough of it.
Money was the reason that Mandy had to take extra shifts at the restaurant and Georgie had to answer towing calls in the middle of the night.
It’s also the reason Georgie wanted to go to church in the first place. He was promised monetary blessings, and he needed more than the $11 he could win off Jim playing cards before Jim gave up.
(As a side note, Jim should have known better since Georgie has beaten them all at cards in other episodes.)
Of course, the money problems and other relationship problems for these two are intertwined.
Having a baby out of wedlock means that CeeCee was born before the young couple was financially ready for her, and Georgie’s job options are limited because he didn’t finish high school.
The financial situation means they have to live with Audrey and Jim, which is a constant source of stress and conflict because Audrey hates Georgie and Georgie gives as good as he gets.
No wonder both of them will do whatever they have to for money! But that means limited time together, which can be a relationship killer.
All of these taken together leads to the relationship implosion, but hopefully not for a long time,
First we need to milk as many laughs as possible out of the situation the couple finds themselves in.
Odds And Ends On Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6
- Weirdly, Connor was not part of this episode, which is too bad. It would have cut the tension on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 6 for him to make one of his random comments during a tense moment.
- While I don’t condone violence in real life, Mandy punching Valerie in the nose was incredibly satisfying
- I thought it was strange that Audrey was so desperate for CeeCee to be baptized that she secretly did it (pulling an Archie Bunker!), yet didn’t want to go to church.
- I’m glad Ruben spreading rumors about Georgie and Valerie didn’t seriously damage anything. If Jim hadn’t believed Georgie when Georgie said he was only interested in Mandy, that could have been a serious problem.
