Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 8 Suggests That Audrey And Georgie Are More Alike Than They Realize

They say you hate what reminds you most of yourself, and Audrey seems to agree.

This whole time, she’s complained about Georgie being too young and too uneducated for Mandy.

However, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 8 suggested that they have something major in common. Could these two someday become friends?

Audrey And Georgie’s Stories Were The Same Even Though It Didn’t Seem Like It

On the surface, Georgie and Mandy’s conflict seemed completely different than what Audrey was dealing with.

Georgie agreed to give Mandy $1200 toward diet shakes and nutrition bars that Mandy was unlikely to ever sell, then spent the rest of the episode aggravating her by trying to do it for her.

Naturally, he was able to convince a guy walking by to buy two boxes of diet stuff, while everyone ignored Mandy’s asking if they were interested.

It was equally unsurprising that Mandy got more angry at Georgie than she had her entire life.

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

She was already resentful that he made a good living while she worked for sub-minimum wages at a diner, so why would she be happy that he one-upped her the second he tried selling her diet stuff?

Meanwhile, Audrey was shocked that Connor was capable of doing household chores and had been holding back only because Jim hadn’t asked him.

There was more to it than that, of course. The most poignant moment in “Diet Crap” was when Audrey admitted to Jim that she didn’t really want Connor to take care of himself because she liked doing things for him.

In a way, she and Mandy have the same conflict, except that Audrey is from a generation where women were expected to be stay-at-home moms, so searching for a job to fulfill her was not an option.

If her 26-year-old “baby boy” can become fully independent, where does that leave Audrey? Her life will be empty because she hasn’t known anything but being a mom for several decades.

However, this issue also shows how much Audrey and Georgie have in common. Audrey wants to jump in to fix everything for Connor, just like Georgie wanted to fix Mandy’s issue with sales.

Thus, Audrey and Georgie are overeager to help, stifling and annoying the people they love. Is it possible that Audrey’s irritation with Georgie is partially because she sees this quality in him, and it makes her uncomfortable?

Of course, there could be a myriad of other, complicated reasons for Georgie and Audrey’s dynamic.

From Audrey’s point of view, Georgie usurped her role as the most important person in Mandy’s life. He also got her pregnant, and she sees him as uneducated and an embarrassment to the family.

Still, the more time goes on, the less she seems like the snobby and annoying antagonist she was back in the Young Sheldon days.

She’s more human and relatable. She wants what’s best for Mandy, and eventually, she may warm up to Georgie… if he and Mandy don’t break up first.

The Young Couple Had The Same Argument On Georgie & Mandy Season 1 Episode 8 They Have Every Week

Although the specifics are different, almost every one of Georgie and Mandy’s arguments boils down to financial issues.

Mandy is embarrassed about her credit card debt and resents that she works in a diner despite having a college degree.

Her future, including her financial plans, was all thrown off when she and Georgie conceived CeeCee.

This problem seems insurmountable, though they seem to be working through it every week so far. Still, it seems like this is the thing that will eventually break them up.

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

The entire premise of the series seems to rest on the question of whether the accidental pregnancy can lead to a loving marriage and family, even though they never planned for any of it to happen.

In that way, it’s almost like an American version of the UK’s Catastrophe, which was also about an accidental family that started with an unplanned pregnancy.

The diner scene on Georgie & Mandy Season 1 Episode 8 was an especially poignant reminder of how frustrated Mandy is.

Not only does she have to go to a job that pays far less than she’d like and doesn’t utilize any of the skills she went to college to learn, but she also has to put up with customers like that man who sits there forever but doesn’t want anything but tea.

That customer made Mandy feel completely useless, which isn’t healthy for her or her marriage to Georgie.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 8 Was Funny Despite These Serious Issues

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

Although there’s a lot to dissect about the characters and situations, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is primarily a comedy, and it’s never forgotten that.

The banter between the McAllisters is always hilarious. Connor’s dry sense of humor adds something to the exchanges as much as everyone else’s sarcasm and defensiveness do.

Mandy: Now that Cici’s starting to walk, we should really think about babyproofing the house.

Audrey: I didn’t babyproof anything, and you and your brother lived.

Mandy: Have you forgotten that Connor tried to stick a butter knife in an outlet?

Audrey: He lived, didn’t he?

Mandy: I’m just saying, maybe that’s why he is the way he is.

Connor: You mean my electric personality?

Connor’s subplot was amusing, too. I loved how agreeable he was to doing chores if only he were asked.

That’s probably a function of his neurodivergence — something that would not have been understood in the 1990s when this takes place.

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

Connor didn’t automatically understand that he was supposed to contribute to the household, but as soon as it was spelled out, he was more than willing to help.

I can’t decide whether I’m happier that Connor finally has real storylines or that his family discovered that when they expect something of him, he delivers.

That’s a significant, positive message about neurodivergent people that we need more of on TV.

We are often more capable than people realize, but like Connor, we are not always asked to do anything.

Over to you, Georgie & Mandy fanatics.
