If you own a General Motors diesel-powered truck or SUV, you might soon receive a recall letter. The automaker is pulling back almost half a million vehicles for a bad transmission control valve, which could cause a failure and increase the risk of a crash.
GM said it had seen 11 reports of issues related to the problem, which impacts the following models:
- 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500
- 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
- 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe
- 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
If present, the transmission control valve issue could cause a temporary wheel lockup, making it much more likely that the driver will crash. The automaker said it first heard of the problem in June of this year when an owner reported that the wheels on their 2021 GMC Sierra HD locked up while towing, damaging the truck and trailer.
GM said dealers would update the vehicles’ transmission control module software to detect a problem and alert the driver up to 10,000 miles before a potential lockup occurs. Owners will begin receiving letters in early December. GM also promised to “cover the repair of transmissions that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve.”
The U.S. recall impacted 461,839 vehicles, but it’s not the only action related to the problem. General Motors is recalling the same models in Canada, where 52,220 vehicles could be affected.
