Sometimes, I forget how cute Mer and Nic are as a couple.
Surprisingly, we had a healthy dose of the pair during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 11, which put them at odds over a liver and brought up the reality of what their lives could hold in the future.
One thing that remains pleasantly consistent about the series is its devotion to exploring Alzheimer’s and its weight on Mer and others.
Let’s Get Biblical — Split the Liver, Baby!
The whole Evan thing didn’t get any less irritating than it did during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 10.
She lied to get her wife a liver, placed everyone’s jobs in jeopardy, and was generally a dick.
The latter continued when she quickly made snap judgments about Meredith and others because they didn’t bend to her will or subscribe to all the ethically questionable actions she had partaken in to get Tasha a liver.
Should we have sympathized with Evan? Possibly, but the character was so grating that it was hard to do that.
She put everything and everyone in jeopardy, which meant the board had to decide if Tasha could get the liver after everything Evan pulled. Shockingly, her declining health and mental state weren’t a mitigating factor in that decision.

But Bailey and Ben’s patient, Lisa, also desperately needed a liver and was a match, which resulted in a race for the board to decide hopes of saving someone’s life.
Evan’s audacity during all of this was astounding. She did entirely way too much, so the thought that she’d lash out at everyone, make assumptions, and then get mad that someone else could get the liver was too much for me.
Evan Was Annoying and Unsympathetic
She also behaved as if no one else had experience with Alzheimer’s and had lost their touch, ability to understand the plight and compassion.
Evan quickly assumed that Mer was too buried in her patients and research that she lost sight of seeing people as humans with lives deserving of second chances.
On paper, it made sense to give the liver to Lisa, but neither Evan nor Nick were having any of that.

Nick’s devotion to this case and advocacy for Evan and Tasha did seem to come with some ulterior motives, so it made sense that Mer would call him out on it. However, we also know that Nick is always passionate about his patients.
Kudos to him for coming up with a solution ripped from Bible tales that involved them splitting the liver.
Essentially, they got two for the price of one, saving two lives because livers regenerate. It was too big for Lisa, and Tasha only needed so much of it.
It’s a happy ending for everyone, and Evan apologizes to Mer, who showed a level of grace far superior to my own after all of that, and Catherine is still pissed, but she’ll probably get over it.
Mer and Webber even made up, which is nice because it always sucks when they’re fighting.
The entire messy case paid off when Nick and Mer had an honest discussion about the events of that day.
Mer and Nick Really Are in It For the Long-Haul

Mer assumed that when Nick looked at Tasha, he thought about Meredith. After all, Tasha was a woman who started suffering from Alzheimer’s brutally young, and it’s a sobering reality that he and Mer could face the same fate.
But he elaborated that it was more of a matter of him seeing himself in Evan and knowing that he would move heaven and earth to get Mer whatever she needed because he loves her that much.
Presumably, he’s so accustomed to Mer going rogue that her abiding by the rules this time threw him off. But the fact that he could relate to Evan so much lit a fire under him more than usual.
Nick and Mer are so perfectly content as a couple, and I love that they can spar a bit in the field and then have these talks and clear the air at the end of the day.
They’re a healthy couple, which is great, considering many others can be all over the place.
Sorry, Not Sorry. Still Don’t Care about Molly and Kwan

Does anyone actually care about Molly and Kwan? I struggle to get invested in their love story.
She clouds his judgment all of the time, and their history doesn’t translate well because we barely know either character as it is.
The old interns used to do outrageous things like underground surgery clubs where they performed operations on each other.
This brood? They hide the fact that they’re working on one of their loved ones. But at least Amelia is always game.
Kwan overstepped all over the place, and Molly wants to have experimental brain surgery just so she can remember him. It’s good for them, I guess.
And Lucas and Simone are still going strong. Given that Simone has moments where she’s the intern who parallels Mer, it was fitting that during an installment that featured Alzheimer’s so heavily, it made her think about her grandmother.
Teddy Has Two Hands — Cass Wants One of Them

Lucas’s offer to go with her to spend time with her grandmother was sweet. It shows how much he genuinely loves Simone and wants to support her.
And then there’s Teddy and Owen.
Cass was back, and so was that smoking-hot sexual tension she had with Teddy. I have to respect that woman for flat-out telling Teddy that she was trying to respect her boundaries while still leaving the door wide open for more.
It seems Teddy isn’t accustomed to someone being that bold with her. She also doesn’t cross lines as long as she claims she doesn’t want to, but the thing is, we know that she does.
Towen has been in a race to see who would cheat on the other first for a while.
Smells Like an Open Marriage on the Horizon

At least they’re at a place where they can be honest with each other, but we spent the whole hour with Owen giggling over texts with Nora and Teddy, ready to pounce on Cass, who was totally there to flirt with Teddy.
But it wasn’t until Owen’s patient embarrassed himself with that love confession that somehow paid off that he seemed to come to grips with having feelings for more than one person.
Those obnoxious kids not only appealed to Owen with their ridiculous scavenger hunt fiasco, but they may have opened his eyes up to polyamory.
He and Teddy talk at the end and are honest with each other, which is progress for them. But it seems like both of them mostly admit that they have connections with other people while still hopelessly loving each other and that their next steps will be opening up their marriage.
Maybe they think it’ll serve them well, recognizing that people can meet different needs.
