Honda Recalling Pilot and Passport Over Leaky Fuel Filler

Honda is recalling roughly 200,000 examples of the Passport and Pilot SUVs due to issues with the factory installation of the fuel filler. In some instances, the neck and pipe leading to the fuel tank may separate. Honda believes that this could pose a fire risk in the event of an accident, as there would be a greater likelihood of fuel leaking from the affected vehicles.

Obviously, having a leaky fuel filler isn’t ideal when you’re not involved in a crash either. So Honda is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall 205,760 Pilot and Passport models manufactured between February 14th, 2023, and May 8th, 2024. Affected Passport SUVs are likely to be from the 2023 and 2024 model years, whereas the Pilot could have issues going all the way to the 2025 model year.

The relevant documents stipulate that some vehicles may have an incomplete connection between the fuel filler pipe and neck tube with the presumed culprit being installed incorrectly. Honda believes that an “out of sequence process prevented the fuel neck tube and fuel filler pipe from forming a complete connection” within the filler assembly.

Honda believes that only about one percent of the total recall volume actually possess the defect and says it only has a single warranty claim on file. There have likewise been no known injuries pertaining to the problem. While recalls are never good, Honda’s response to this one certainly seems to be.

The entire campaign was kicked off after that initial warranty claim was filed in May of 2024. Honda immediately went to check its warehouse inventory and noticed several other vehicles yielding the defect, prompting it to launch a formal investigation at the start of June. By November, Honda determined that a defect would make it out of compliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and decided to conduct a safety/noncompliance recall.

The manufacturer plans to begin contacting owners starting in January. However, concerned parties can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline (888-327-4236) or use the NHTSA recall website. The recall campaign number is 24V900000, though you’ll still want to have your VIN handy. Alternatively, customers can reach out to Honda directly.
