Hyundai and Kia Expand Electrified Vehicle Recall

Hyundai and Kia just expanded a recall for some electric models. The action now includes more than 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada for an issue with the integrated charging control units.

The recall now includes:

  • 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
  • 2023-2025 Genesis GV60
  • 2023-2025 Genesis GV70
  • 2023-2024 Genesis G80
  • 2022-2024 Kia EV6

Recall documentation states that the problem relates to the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), which handles charging the 12-volt battery and powers low-voltage accessories. If defective, the ICCU’s metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor could fail, resulting in an inability to charge the battery and power equipment. Once the vehicle detects a failure, it enters a “fail-safe” driving mode (limp mode) and reduces drive power.

The driver may notice warning lights or hear an audible chime before the vehicle reduces motive power. That said, a loss of output is a dangerous situation that could significantly increase the crash risk, even if the driver notices and attempts to stop safely.

Hyundai will issue a software update as part of the fix and said that it would replace the ICCU assembly and associated fuses if necessary. The new software limits overvoltage to the ICCU at the start and end of battery charging cycles. It also optimizes the water pump and radiator fan operation to improve cooling during operation.
