Solid-state batteries may be here sooner than previously expected, though the word “may” is doing a whole lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. A recent report from The Korean Car Blog suggests that the automaker could start testing the new battery configurations as soon as next year, but it’s important to note that the tests don’t mean Hyundai is on the verge of a commercial breakthrough.
The Korean automaker built a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Sakura City, Japan, where it plans to work out the bugs in its commercial solid-state battery production processes. That said, Hyundai is still in the very early stages of development, meaning it will still likely be a few years before it or any other automaker brings a solid-state battery to market.
