Jose Munoz has served as the CEO of Hyundai and Genesis North America and COO of Hyundai Motors for a while now, but his job is about to get a whole lot bigger. The long-time auto exec was recently promoted to the position of CEO of Hyundai Motor Corporation, which will take place on January 1, 2025.
Munoz said the promotion was an “honor,” noting that he’s “excited and motivated by the challenge ahead and want to continue Hyundai’s growth trajectory.” The company’s current CEO, Jaehoon Chang, will move to the role of vice chair of Hyundai Group’s automotive division. Hyundai has not yet announced who will fill Munoz’s current roles.
Munoz will focus on “advancing the company’s global management system to further strengthen Hyundai Motors’ status as a global brand.” The 59-year-old said he would continue pushing forward with alternative fuels and electrification, solidifying Hyundai Motors’ “leadership position in next-generation mobility.”
Munoz joined Hyundai in 2019 to oversee the brand and Genesis in North America. He was also elected to the board of directors in 2023, which surprised many because of his non-Korean descent. His leadership has helped the company achieve impressive sales growth in North America, and he’s guided the automaker into electrification with billions in investments across battery and other engineering projects.
