Law & Order: Organized Crime Unveils Season 5 Premiere Date and Trailer — Can It Survive as a Peacock Exclusive?

We spent years waiting for Christopher Meloni’s return to the Law & Order universe, and there were concerns he would leave all over again last year.

When Law & Order: Organized Crime didn’t secure a renewal at NBC, the popular spinoff seemed destined for cancellation.

Thankfully, Peacock swooped in to save the day with a Season 5 renewal, and we finally have some scoop.

The hit series will return with two new episodes on Thursday, April 17, followed by one new episode per week until its season finale in June.

Meloni stars as Det. Elliot Stabler, who returned to New York after a decade abroad to rebuild his life following a devastating personal loss.

“As lead detective in Sgt. Ayanna BeBell’sDanielle Moné Truitt) Organized CrimeControl Bureau, he works to dismantle New York’s most vicious and violent illegal enterprises while fending off dangers that often follow him home,” Peacock teases.

“Helping to expose the dark and complex criminal world of their targets are undercover expert Bobby Reyes (Rick Gonzalez) and tech genius Jet Slootmaekers (Ainsley Seiger).

Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Will Delve Into Stabler’s Past

“While on assignment, Stabler leans on his brother Randall (Dean Norris) to keep the Stabler family safe and thriving.

“Season five explores the dangerous worlds of cross-border smuggling, high-tech domestic terrorism, and a crime family intent on repaying Stabler for the injury he did them in Rome,” the logline continues.

“As his worlds collide, Stabler will put everything on the line to protect the vulnerable and fight for justice.”

The teaser trailer showcases Stabler and his team as they tackle what looks to be their most dangerous case to date.

Law & Order: Organized Crime has been one of the faster-paced entries in the franchise, and the first footage certainly highlights that things will not be slow.

Having 10 episodes should allow for tighter storytelling, but it remains to be seen whether the show will continue to perform well as a streaming original.

Of course, the Law & Order franchise has planted deep roots on broadcast TV over the last 35 years, but it seems the latest entry did have some good viewership on Peacock to trigger the renewal.

A better strategy would have been for Peacock to have first-run rights to the episode before sending them to NBC, perhaps in the summer because there’s little to watch on the broadcast networks at that time of year nowadays.

Can the Series Thrive on Peacock?

Some franchise viewers may find it difficult to watch the continuing adventures of a legacy character on streaming.

Law & Order: Organized Crime has had countless creative hurdles in the past, so the hope is that things calm down and it solidifies itself as a decent performer.

A good way to get some viewers would be to stage crossovers with Law & Order: SVU because Benson-Stabler team-ups are exciting.
