Is there a statute of limitations when it comes to cheating?
They say that love is a many splendored thing, but it can also be fairly fickle. Whoever came up with these sayings never married an attorney from Matlock’s Jacobson Moore.
Out of all the male characters on the show, Julian has been the nicest, as well as the most supportive and understanding to Olympia. Yet, somehow, he is up for both best and worst husband of the year.
Throughout the first half of Matlock, Olympia Lawrence has been nothing short of a force of nature.
From how she effortlessly commands a room with her indomitable spirit to her well-hidden big heart, Olympia is a great example of a woman who knows and uses her strengths with expert skill.
So, what is a wife of her caliber to do when the love of her life tells her he was once unfaithful to her?
Since the start of Matlock Season 1, Olympia Lawrence has been at the front and center of the show as much as Matty. That’s probably why Olympia’s story feels almost as pivotal to the central plot as much as Madeline’s revenge.
The two women have spent about ninety percent of the series attached at the hip, with their bond only growing. However, it was a tough start because Olympia had more walls up than Fort Knox.
And she should because I can’t imagine being a high-powered lawyer and a woman of color comes easy, even in this day and age. Miss Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) has herself a nice set of brass balls that she has no problem making it known to everyone around her.
Still, at the end of the day, Olympia is just as human as every other character on Matlock, and even she can’t close herself off from the pain of betrayal.
It was a bit of a shock finding out at the end of “Belly of the Beast” that Julian had stepped out on Olympia years ago before they separated.
They say you always have to look out for the “nice guys,” but that seems to be a storytelling myth because, in the real world, I’m pretty sure it’s the bad guys who tend to stray more than the men with actual hearts.
That’s just been my experience though, and if you know of a real-life nice guy who strayed like Julian, please turn this myth into a fact in the comments down below.
However, the real surprise came in Matlock Season 1 Episode 8, which showed just how distraught Olympia was from the news. In complete honesty, I genuinely did not expect her to be so thrown by the news.
Granted, it makes for excellent TV, but did anyone else think Olympia would easily brush the whole thing off for the sake of restarting things on a good note with Julian?
Those skilled Matlock writers are always one step ahead. Rather than have Olympia be the boss that she always is, the hands behind the show allowed the character to react as any other person would.
Olympia has been going back and forth between wanting to know the woman’s identity and knowing that her face would haunt her if she knew.
However, by the end of the episode, the decision is made in true Olympia form, with her choosing to face the situation head-on.
Now, as for Julian, that’s a tough one. Sure, he made a mistake before he and Olympia separated, but what was the cause? Was it just that things in the marriage were rocky?
As long as whatever made Julian (Jason Ritter) cheat has been dealt with, it should be smooth sailing for the two now.
It also has to be something specific because no marriage is without its rough patches or two. The more specific the reason for Julian’s infidelity, the more likely that it can be worked through.
Either way, this whole event is a good chance for Olympia to get used to the sting of betrayal. Once she finds out that Madeline Matlock is Madeline Kingston, all hell will break loose.
For now, we’ll just have to brace for impact until CBS‘s Matlock comes back from winter break in a couple of weeks.
