Mayfair Witches Season 1 was a meandering mess with too many characters and insufficient payoff, so the only way was up for Mayfair Witches Season 2 Episode 1, which cranked up the pace and showcased that there may be life in AMC’s second Immortal Universe series after all.
The premiere was brimming with potential, but as the season progresses, some glaring issues with the adaptation of Anne Rice’s excellent novels must be addressed.
Let’s dive in because we have a lot to discuss.
After the physical and mental ramifications of Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 8, it’s a miracle that Rowan didn’t leave the country and find another way to fill her time because who in their right mind would want to remain in New Orleans?
Alexandra Daddario has been too subdued in the role of Rowan. She’s enjoying the different layers of the character she’s getting to play this season, but there is still room for improvement.
One of the best aspects of the series is how the Mayfairs have different views on Lasher, making it increasingly difficult for Rowan to pick a side. On the one hand, she sees him as her son because she gave birth to him.
On the other, she’s well aware of his murderous tendencies and how he’s manipulated generations of her family for his wicked motivations.
There’s a lot about Lasher that we don’t know, and Mayfair Witches Season 2 seems poised to zero in on that.
Jack Huston didn’t get much to do in the premiere because Lasher was growing up for most of it, but the series would have benefited from another episode or two of teenage Lasher to give Rowan more time to form an attachment to him.
The complicated dynamic between them was handled very well, and there was much to gain from continuing with that. That said, the pace sometimes must be increased to accommodate such a short season, so the reward may be worth this sacrifice.
Speaking of sacrifices, what in the world did Lasher do to Lucy? More importantly, what are the chances that the woman who drew his attention on Bourbon Street was another family member?
Something must have told him she was a Mayfair because he can’t avoid them.
The broader issue with this murder is how it will shape the rest of Mayfair Witches Season 2 because the anti-Lasher members of the family will probably turn on Rowan because she played a part in hiding the body.
Of course, there’s no concrete proof that Lasher killed Lucy, but a lot must have happened so quickly that we aren’t privy to it because the show wanted to kickstart a mystery to keep us questioning.
Given what we’ve witnessed of Lasher in the past and the present, his unscrupulous actions are just par for the course.
The addition of Moira was an interesting development because she sees Rowan as somewhat responsible for her sister’s death. Rowan’s actions aren’t helping her case, and Moira has much to earn from working with Ciprian.
Ciprian was one of the better-written characters on Mayfair Witches Season 1, but his storyline this season has been frustrating and unbelievable.
The fact that he’s been on the run from the Talamasca because he was sure they wanted to scrub his memory, only for him to have this higher purpose with Moira, is laughable.
Given the lengths we witnessed Rowan go to to keep people away from Lasher, it’s hard to believe she didn’t do something to incapacitate him so that she didn’t have to be looking over her shoulder every two minutes.
The problem for Moira is that she’ll be right in Lasher’s crosshairs now because he knows she resents him for not helping Tessa in her time of need.
Add in the fact that she’ll likely work with Ciprian, and it’s easy to see where Lasher’s arc is headed for the rest of Mayfair Witches Season 2.
The big question is where the chips will land for the rest of the Mayfairs. Everyone has distinctly different views on him, which should create plenty of storyline potential.
Rowan had her hands full while trying to establish what she could do to hinder his growth and powers, but at least we saw her having a tender moment with the young girl battling cancer.
There’s a part of Rowan that wants to see the good in everyone and is adamant about helping those in need, which was perfectly illustrated at the hospital.
Still, so many blanks about her past make Lark one of the most crucial additions to Mayfair Witches this season.
It’s evident that he and Rowan share a past, and going by Lark’s reaction to hearing her on the other end of the phone, they may not quite be finished with one another.
Lark strikes me as the kind of man who will bend backward to help Rowan, and he’s already doing so with the tests on Lasher’s blood sample.
The season premiere introduced some interesting storylines, but I am unsure whether many of the characters’ arcs will be warranted.
Squandered potential was the name of the game with the first season, but I hope that the series can continue working through its issues to deliver something more befitting of the source material.
A lot is riding on the success of Mayfair Witches Season 2 because AMC is moving full steam ahead with the Immortal Universe.
The Talamasca is coming up later this year, but given the governing body for supernatural beings plays a considerable part in Mayfair Witches, there’s a chance that viewers will be tired of their storyline by the time the series debuts.
Then again, it could be more like Interview With the Vampire, which, with its second season, was arguably one of the best shows of 2024.
That series has managed to utilize the source material to perfection, and it has translated into a stellar supernatural drama.
