Many exciting shows are coming to Hulu over the next couple of months.
The streaming service confirmed on Monday that Mid-Century Modern, its highly-anticipated multi-camera comedy, is one of those and will receive its debut on March 28.
The series will stray from the typical weekly rollout, with the streaming platform dropping all 10 episodes on the premiere date.
Some shows benefit from the weekly release strategy to keep the conversation flowing, but we’ll reserve judgment on whether a binge release will benefit this series.
“Three Best Friends – gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother,” reads the logline.
“As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done,” the tongue-in-cheek description concludes.
Mid-Centry Modern stars Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur Broussard, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.
The series is from executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and executive producer Ryan Murphy.
Stars Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer also executive produce the series, along with James Burrows, who also serves as director. 20th Television is the studio.
Confirmed guest stars include Pamela Adlon, Vanessa Bayer, Kimberly Coles, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Judd Hirsch, Richard Kind, Stephanie Koenig, Billie Lourd, Esther Moon Wu, Jaime Moyer, Cheri Oteri, Rhea Perlman, and Zane Phillips.
Sadly, Linda Lavin passed away while filming the series, but co-creator Max Mutchnick revealed on Instagram earlier this year that the series “filmed an episode I never thought we’d have to write.”
Max also shared photos, confirming that the show filmed a farewell on-screen for Linda.
The beloved actress taped seven of the 10 episodes, so it seems like a large part of the final episodes will be how the characters move on in a post-Sybil world.
It’s always interesting to hear about multi-camera comedies on streaming, particularly Hulu, which previously had How I Met Your Father.
The Hilary Duff comedy lasted two seasons before being canceled by Hulu, much to the surprise of the show’s fans.
Mid-Century Modern has had a fast development process. It scored a series order shortly after filming a pilot late last year.
Now that we’re inching closer to a premiere date, it will be exciting to see the finished product.
The cast and creative team are reason enough to tune in.
Also on Hulu’s upcoming schedule are Good American Family (premiering March 19) and the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale (April 8).
