Power Never Dies. But Is It Time For Power’s TV Universe To Call It Quits?

The Power Universe is in rarefied air at this point.

You seldom see a series span several hit spinoffs that keep the original world relevant some ten-plus years after its debut.

Power has managed to do that and more, but as the spinoffs begin to end, you have to wonder whether or not time is catching up to the popular universe.

Could it be time to pull the plug?

I could give a long spiel about the universe’s pros and cons and make you wait for the answer to that straightforward question, but I’m simply not going to do that.

The answer is a resounding no.

  • Mayfair Witches Season 2 Episode 6 Shifts the Action to Scotland, but the Bad Decisions Keep Coming
  • The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 1’s Blast From the Past Is a Blessing and a Curse

And it’s a resounding no because nothing about this universe is slowing down.

That’s because there are still stories left to tell and audiences that want to hear them.

Look no further than the upcoming return of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which is poised to return for season four in just a few short weeks.

When Power first ended, fans were surprised and delighted to discover that several spinoffs were waiting in the wings.

Power Book II: Ghost, the first and the one with the most recognizable characters, became a surefire hit.

It lasted for four seasons, and while its ending was not particularly satisfying, its impact cannot be denied.

The series was a continuation of one of the most polarizing characters ever, Tariq St. Patrick, and it not only shaded in his story more but connected back to the original series in countless ways and helped us even better understand certain things from the original series.

There was buzz when Raising Kanan came along, but it was slightly muted because not everyone was interested in a prequel series that didn’t revolve around Ghost and Tommy, the two biggest stars from Power.

Yes, we are getting that long-awaited prequel for the duo now, but four years ago, when the series debuted, we didn’t know that.

  • Mayfair Witches Season 2 Episode 6 Shifts the Action to Scotland, but the Bad Decisions Keep Coming
  • The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 1’s Blast From the Past Is a Blessing and a Curse

All we knew was that the universe was diving into the origin stories of another one of the most polarizing characters and introducing us to a large cast of characters we had no emotional connection to.

Why should we care about these people?

What does an origin story about Kanan add to the larger narrative?

It didn’t take long to get an answer to those questions, as Raising Kanan proved itself to be the strongest of the spinoffs.

Patina Miller and Mekai Curtis are outstanding as Raq Thomas and Kanan Stark, the murderous mother-son duo who lead a strong cast of complicated and intriguing characters who’ve not only made their mark on the universe but improved it tenfold.

In learning about Kanan and Jukebox, we deeply appreciate the adult versions we met on Power and their subsequent struggles and decisions.

And for the Marvins and Uniques whom we came to know, their histories are inextricably linked to everything because they helped shape Kanan Stark’s childhood and thus his rise through the streets to the powerful played he’d become over the years.

We didn’t know how much we needed Raising Kanan until we had it.

The same could be said for Power Book IV: Force, which may not have been a direct continuation in the way Ghost was, but it allowed Tommy Egan, the Power fan-favorite, to continue his story in a new city and on his own terms.

Force hasn’t resonated quite as much as the others, but it’s a solid tale, and it’s a shame that the series is getting ready to wrap up its run coming off the back of its best season.

But all the series have a purpose, and they all have relevance and meaning to the universe.

It’s easy to say something should end because it’s gone on too long or because there’s been a dip in quality.

Or worse, it’s no longer of interest to the audience.

Power Universe shows remain the hottest thing on Starz.

Over a decade has passed since we first heard, ‘They say this is a big rich town…’ and fans are still talking about Ghost, Tommy, Angela, Tasha, Tariq, Kanan, and various other characters who have come and gone over the years.

Power never dies, and it shouldn’t until they’ve kicked the well dry and told all the stories they could across all the webs they weaved.

All right, fanatics, what are your thoughts about the state of the Power universe?

Is it time to let it go?

Or should they keep it going for as long as they can?
