Rescue HI-Surf Exclusive Sneak Peek: Sonny Makes It Official. What Does That Mean for Em?

It isn’t a secret that the future of one Hawaiian beach may be noticeably different in the future.

Rescue HI-Surf has made a big deal about the changing of the guard on this Hawaiian beach, with Sonny’s impending retirement and Em stepping into his shoes.

On Rescue HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 10, Sonny makes it official. What does that mean for Em and the show as it continues?

Sonny has wanted to step back from his command of the lifesaving activities on the beach since Rescue HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 1.

He’s excellent at his job and people trust and respect him. But he’s had more than his fair share of heartbreak on the job, too.

Everyone dreams of retirement, but when your job is associated with sad memories, and you have someone waiting to step up and take your place, the decision is a little easier.

Or so we’d think.

Sonny has not made this decision lightly, and I’m still skeptical that he’ll actually go through with it.

He’s on the cusp of a new chapter of his life, but he doesn’t seem excited about it.

I can’t be the only one who has read about how traumatic it can be to retire, but when your job is literally saving lives, I’d imagine puttering around the house could be incredibly unfulfilling.

And then there’s Em, who is eager to increase her responsibilities but not to the point she’s willing to make wise decisions to get there.

Firing up a romance with her engaged ex isn’t responsible, especially when a promotion comes with a power balance with someone you love.

In this TV Fanatic exclusive Rescue HI-Surf sneak peek, nobody seems all that comfortable with Sonny’s announcement.

Sure, there is the expected congratulatory applause, but it’s like a smile that doesn’t reach your eyes.

Unless you’re Will, who doesn’t even bother faking it.

The look on his face says a lot, but since he’s known she’s been angling for the promotion, that can’t be what’s driving it.

Instead, I think this announcement pulls him out of the moment — the one that has brought Em back into his arms before he had a chance to consider his fiancee.

Rescue HI-Soft uses double entendres in its titling.

“Riptide” likely speaks directly to their latest save but also to their relationship.

Vocabulary.com defines a riptide as an extremely strong, unpredictable current that flows across another.

Sonny, Em, and Will are all caught in one with his impending retirement and her love life.

We’re expecting rough waters ahead.
