It’s been a difficult few years for fans of teen-focused TV, particularly on streaming platforms.
Many shows have been unceremoniously canceled as media conglomerates have curbed their spending after a neverending array of shows got pickups.
School Spirits arrived in 2023 and immediately struck a chord with me — and many other viewers — due to its compelling hook.
Ghost stories have been prevalent on the small screen for many years, but Paramount+ hit the big time with the show for its portrayal of a purgatory-like setting for a group of students who died at Split River High School.
Maddie Nears is one of the best characters on TV, thanks to stellar writing and terrific acting from Peyton List.

Peyton’s poignant performance as this teenager trying to unravel the truth about her supposed death was mesmerizing.
The series sent things in a stunning direction when the School Spirits Season 1 finale revealed that Maddie hadn’t died at the school as first expected.
School Spirits Season 2 Was A Near-Perfect Season
Instead, her body was inhabited by a teen ghost named Janet, who was running around town, racking up quite the rap sheet.
The development turned the series on its head. It also expanded the mythology considerably on School Spirits Season 2, which recently wrapped with an equally big twist in the form of Simon being trapped with Janet and Mr. Martin.

We don’t know whether he’s died or if something else entirely had allowed him to enter a location previously shut off to him, but it was quite the conclusion.
Then, there’s the fact that Maddie has reclaimed her body, returned to the land of the living, and learned that her ex-boyfriend, Xavier, can also see spirits in the hospital.
Few shows avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, but the creatives masterfully elevated the stakes to deliver answers and kick off a wealth of new plots for Season 3.
Thankfully, Paramount+ broke the news that new are officially in the works, thanks to drastically increased viewership for Season 2.

“We are so thrilled to bring SCHOOL SPIRITS back to our devoted audiences for another season of masterful storytelling brought to life by Peyton List and the incredible cast,” said Shauna Phelan, Head of Live Action Scripted Series and Film for Awesomeness and Nickelodeon in a statement on Wednesday.
“Co-showrunners Oliver Goldstick, Nate Trinrud and Megan Trinrud have an exceptional ability to capture the complexity and nuance of the teen experience, while also keeping audiences on their toes with the unexpected mystery, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the students of Split River High next season.”
The Ghosts Need to Find Peace
Given that the show is coming back, it’s hard to imagine it being for anything more than a final season.
Most shows tend to overstay their welcome, but School Spirits has all of the ingredients to deliver a third and final chapter that brings everything full circle.

Sometimes, it’s best to follow the story instead of how well a show is performing, and in School Spirits’ case, the narrative needs to conclude sooner rather than later.
Watching Maddie and Simon on opposite sides of the fence on Season 3 will be interesting. If that’s not a final-season vibe, then I don’t know what is.
Then there’s the big question about whether Wally is gone after seemingly walking into the after-afterlife.
After years of being tortured about his death, he deserves peace, but the show will lose a lot without the charismatic Milo Manheim.
