Stellantis Announces the AutoDrive Level 3 Assistance System

Many automakers offer hands-free driving-assistance tech in new vehicles, but most are limited to SAE Level 2 functionality. Mercedes-Benz and BMW were early to develop Level 3 driving systems, but Stellantis is now joining the party. The automaker’s new AutoDrive feature is said to be “ready for deployment,” and it released a video showing its functionality in Alfa Romeo and Jeep vehicles.

To be clear, Level 3 autonomy doesn’t mean the car drives itself. The driver must be ready to take control at any time. Stellantis said its system works in stop-and-go traffic, in “challenging weather conditions,” and at night. The automaker also noted that owners can upgrade AutoDrive to work at higher speeds and off-road.

We don’t yet know how the system operates or which sensors Stellantis uses to power it, but it also offers Level 2 driving at higher speeds. The new system joins the company’s other new tech developments in recent times, including STLA Brain and STLA SmartCockpit, which lean into AI and connected services to improve and add features over time.

The first round of Level 3-capable cars has yet to hit American roads. Mercedes offers its system on some S-Class models in Germany and has certified it for use in the U.S., but it’s not here yet. BMW has shown its Level 3 Personal Pilot system in the 7 Series sedan, but there’s no word on when it will debut for road use here.
