Stellantis Recalls More Than 300,000 HD Trucks for Braking and Traction Control Issues

Ford might be the most recalled automaker in recent history, but Stellantis isn’t far behind, at number three for recalls since 2010. The Ram brand is adding another recall to the list with a recent action that impacted 339,749 trucks in the U.S. and Canada.

The automaker is recalling certain 2017 and 2018 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 pickup trucks for an issue with the brake hydraulic control unit. The component could fail or malfunction, which may cause issues with the antilock braking system (ABS) or traction control (TCS), making a crash more likely. Most of the affected vehicles are in the U.S., with 317,630 trucks recalled here. ZF manufactured the components, which will be replaced free of charge under the recall with revised units featuring an updated pump motor brush.

If the issue is present, owners may see a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or ABS warning light. TCS and ABS are two of the most important vehicle safety features. Traction control helps prevent wheel slip, and antilock brakes help the driver maintain control by pulsing the brakes to avoid a full lockup.

Stellantis, formed in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Autos (FCA) and Peugeot (Groupe PSA), said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem but noted that it had received thousands of complaints from owners. The automaker recorded 4,622 customer assistance instances, more than 50,000 warranty claims, and almost 1,500 field reports.
