Subaru Tops Consumer Reports’ 2025 Reliability and Overall Rankings

Subaru is back at the top of Consumer Reports’ annual vehicle survey for the second time in the last four years. At the same time, domestic automakers had a poor showing, struggling with safety, reliability, and performance.

The top ten best all-around brands on the 2024 Consumer Reports’ brand report card include:

  • Subaru: 82 overall score
  • BMW: 78
  • Lexus: 77
  • Porsche: 77
  • Honda: 75
  • Audi: 74
  • Kia: 73
  • Hyundai: 73
  • Toyota: 73
  • Infiniti: 71

Subaru toppled BMW from the number-one spot, which it held in 2024, while Chrysler saw the most significant improvement from last year, climbing eight spots. Buick dropped four spots, Ford fell two, and Cadillac tumbled seven spots. Lincoln and Chevy both fell three.

While those are overall scores, Subaru also took the top spot for reliability, its first time at number one. Lexus and Toyota have alternated positions at the top for the last five years, making Subaru’s ascent (pun intended) even more impressive. They took the second and third spots, while Honda and Acura rounded out the five most reliable brands. American automakers were shut out of the top ten for reliability, with the best showing from a Detroit company coming from Buick at number 11.

Consumer Reports looked at 20 potential problem areas, such as the engine, electric drivetrain components, electronics, and more. The publication studied around 300,000 vehicles from between the 2000 and 2024 model years, as well as a handful of new 2025 models.
