Super Bowl LIX Automotive Commercial Live-Ish Blog

It can be pretty well assumed that few people are driving anything more advanced than a well-cushioned Barcalounger tonight. The eyes of the sports world are trained on New Orleans in one way or another – whether via cable, a well-timed short-term “trial” of some random streaming service soon to be cancelled, or (like yours truly) a traditional antenna. For those who care relatively little about the outcome of the game between (checks notes) Philadelphia and Kansas City, the bacchanalia of capitalism shall reign supreme. As this isn’t The Truth About Light Beer, we shall concern ourselves tonight with the appearance of automobiles.

Like each year for the last nine, I’ll be watching the game along with you, but I’ll have my laptop in my, um, lap. I’ll be sharing the YouTube videos of the automotive commercials – and those commercials that are automotive-adjacent, since relatively few automakers feel the need these days to spend the reported eight million bucks for a thirty-second spot. If anything else interesting comes along, I might comment as well. I’ll keep updating throughout the evening.

So come along for the ride!

Indycar

Um, it’s racing? These new Indycar spots from Fox have been surprisingly decent.

WeatherTech

Yeah, it’s car-adjacent. I’d imagine they don’t have “laser-measured” floor mats for a ’62 (?) Continental, however.

Ram

The first actual automaker commercial of the night. According to “uncle” Glen Powell, ‘yeah, the bears were there.’ It’s pretty much the only way the Bears will ever appear on Super Bowl Sunday.

Editor Tim (from Chicago) knows this Packers fan had to say it.

Halftime show

Ok, I’m SO down for a G-body appearance.

Doordash

Ok, it’s a stretch, but George Washington from SNL has a lovely first-gen Mustang here.

Haagen-Dazs

Dom and Letty drive a Camaro..slowly.

Jeep

Harrison Ford whispers his last name.

FINAL: PHI 40, KC 22

In other words, Eagle wins.

Good evening, everybody.
