Tesla Tells Cybertruck Production Workers To Take a Few Days Off

The Tesla Cybertruck is one of the most talked-about vehicles in recent memory, but that buzz apparently hasn’t equated to the sales volume the automaker projected. Business Insider recently obtained an internal memo sent to workers at Tesla’s Austin factory, telling them to take three days off this week, a sign that the company may have a glut of unsold trucks on its hands.

“On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week (Dec. 3-5), you do not need to report to work,” the memo told workers. Employees will report back to work on Friday and will be paid for the three days off, though the memo noted that some workers would have an adjusted schedule exempt from the pause.

Tesla has been known for giving employees assignments outside of their typical job description, including training exercises and cleaning work instead of their normal tasks. One worker said Tesla has cut overtime, noting, “When I started at Tesla you could expect to get overtime pay, now I feel lucky to get 40 hours.”

While early adopters faced a years-long wait for the truck, the automaker recently invited reservation holders to place an order for one of its in-inventory units, which could suggest that it’s having a hard time moving volume. That said, sales are growing, with Tesla seeing almost 17,000 registrations in the third quarter.
