The Handmaid’s Tale has been one of the most consistent TV series to premiere in the last 10 years.
Yes, it’s consistently bleak, but it’s been one of the strongest shows on the air for a long time.
The big question for me has been whether it would stick the landing because it would be a real shame if the show did not go out in a blaze of glory.
Elisabeth Moss has been a revelation in the role of June Osborne, a performance that has earned her praise, awards, and everything in between.
But The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 indicated that June’s story was reaching its conclusion, and we likely don’t have too long to wait for answers.
OT Fagbenle, who has played Luke Bankhole since the beginning of the Hulu hit back in 2017, took to Instagram earlier this week to reveal that The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 had wrapped filming.
“THATS A WRAP on the final season of Handmaids,” the actor wrote alongside photos of him and his fellow cast members.
“It’s coming soon. Any predictions?” the post concluded.
OT’s post follows in the footsteps of Yvonne Strahovski, who revealed last week that she had filmed her final scenes as Serena Joy.
“And that, Ladies and Gents is a series wrap for Serena Joy. I have so many things to say & so many people to thank,” her post began.
“I have many more photos to post. But for now, goodbye Serena Joy. It was a pleasure knowing you. You brought so much more to my life than I could have ever dreamed of,” the emotional post continues.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart & through my very soggy tears as I drive away from set for the last time.”
In September 2022, news broke that The Handmaid’s Tale would end with its sixth season, giving fans ample time to say goodbye.
The creatives also got enough time to carve out an endgame for June and everyone in her orbit.
She’s been through so much since The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1, so the hope is that she can find some semblance of happiness by the time the series finale rolls around.
Despite the mothership winding down, Hulu is still considering bringing Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel, The Testaments, to life as a series.
The Handmaid’s Tale has racked up a global audience, so the hope is that viewers will remain invested in the franchise’s other offerings.
If the series follows the novel’s plot, it would pick up years after The Handmaid’s Tale, which could be a good way to showcase how the world has changed.
It’s unclear whether any of The Handmaid’s Tale‘s cast members will appear in the offshoot, but perhaps we’ll get more clarity when the final season airs.
Thankfully, Hulu has announced a premiere date for the last hurrah.
Thanks to it rolling out weekly, the season can still premiere even if the final episodes are being edited.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 will premiere on Tuesday, April 8, with a three-episode drop.
Episodes will then air weekly until its May 27 series finale.
In addition to Moss, Fagbenle, and Strahovski, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 stars Madeline Brewer (Janine), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), Max Minghella (Nick), Samira Wiley (Moira), Bradley Whitford (Commander Lawrence), and Amanda Brugel (Rita).
As is the norm with the show, plot details are kept under wraps until closer to transmission because nobody wants spoilers with just a handful of episodes left.
But we do have the official teaser. Check it out below.
What are your thoughts on the series wrapping up? Do you think it’s a good idea to segue into The Testaments?
