The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Best Future is on Netflix After Max Cancellation

On Tuesday afternoon, Max left many viewers stunned when it canceled The Sex Lives of College Girls.

The comedy series was rare in that it was genuinely funny, with powerhouse performances from its leads, Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott.

Simply put, the series cut through a world with a lot of TV, which rarely happens.

The cancellation occurred mere months after the conclusion of the third season, leaving everyone wondering where the series could go next.

Instead of the cliffhangers we were accustomed to with the first two seasons, most storylines were closed up reasonably well, hinting that creatives were unsure about the show’s prospects.

Teen-focused series on Max don’t tend to stand the test of time, as evidenced by the Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars reboots being scrapped after their sophomore seasons.

As a result, there was a strong chance the ladies of Essex College’s final years on campus wouldn’t be televised, which is very upsetting.

The good news is that the door is not fully closed on a fourth season of The Sex Lives of College Girls, with Deadline teasing that Warner Bros. Television has been considering potential homes for the show.

The Sex Lives of College Girls Faces an Uphill Battle to Find a New Home

  • The Hunting Party Season 1 Episode 7 Shakes Things Up with a Ted Bundy Twist, New Alliances & Crucial Shane Reveal
  • The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Episode 2 Pivots Back to TV’s Most Dysfunctional Family
  • When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 11 Calls on The Community to Save Little Jack

Let’s get one thing out of the way: Series moving to new homes is a painfully complex process that almost always fails.

However, there have been many success stories over the years, so the notion that it’s happening gives at least a little hope that new episodes could materialize.

Netflix has saved many canceled shows over the years, including Peacock’s Girls5Eva. Granted, the series failed to find much success and has been in limbo for years, so we shouldn’t expect any more episodes of it to be produced.

However, some shows, particularly those with teen-focused storylines, resonate with the Netflix audience, meaning there’s great potential here to rebrand SLOCG as a Netflix original and distribute it to most territories the platform reaches.

Many of those countries have never heard of the show, so it would be wise to acquire the rights to at least one season to determine whether viewers devour it.

While I much prefer the weekly rollout the show had on Max, it’s one of those shows that would benefit from all episodes being made available on day one.

I hate to admit that, but I’m all for it if it gets the show another home.

Co-creator Mindy Kaling has a longstanding relationship with Netflix, which could sweeten the deal for Netflix bigwigs to open their checkbook and get this show on the road.

Max Never Nurtured the Series Into a Big Hit

  • Genre TV Shows That Deserve a Reboot (Because They Had a Great Premise but Failed in Execution)
  • Black Female Characters Who Made TV Better and Left Us Wanting More
  • Audacious Smashup TV Crossovers That Would Be So Epic

There’s still so much potential to nurture the show into a hit, and Max may have given it three seasons, but it didn’t capitalize on its success.

Promotion is everything, and the third season appeared out of nowhere and ended with little fanfare, leading me to believe that many of the fans didn’t even know it was back.
