The Wheels Are Falling Off At Porsche

Porsche has issued a recall for 1,851 vehicles due to defective center-locking wheel nuts that may fracture, posing a serious safety risk.

Affected models include the 2024 Porsche 911, 718 Spyder RS, and 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the issue arises from a batch of nuts “manufactured out of specification,” which could result in wheel detachment.

Such a failure could lead to a loss of control and potential crashes. Porsche has acknowledged “several incidents” linked to fractured center lock bolts during September and October 2024.

It's unclear what causes the nut to fracture, but it sounds like it could be a metallurgy issue. Porsche acknowledged awareness of “several incidents” linked to fractured center lock bolts between September and October of this year.

The company has urged owners of the affected vehicles to stop driving immediately. Porsche dealerships will inspect and replace any faulty components free of charge, though the stop-drive order complicates getting vehicles to service centers. Porsche is working with dealers to manage these logistical challenges.
