Volvo Renamed and Improved the XC40 Recharge for 2025

Volvo has been selling EVs under the Recharge name for a while now, but the automaker is shifting to new branding for its latest models. The EX90 is on sale now, and the EX30 is coming “soon,” but Volvo is also renaming an existing electric model to align with the updated naming system. The XC40 Recharge will be sold as the EX40 for the 2025 model year, leaving the XC name for upcoming electrified gas models. The EX40’s coupe counterpart, the C40 Recharge will also be renamed the EC30.

Along with a new name, Volvo updated the EX40 with a larger battery pack and improved DC fast charging speeds. Versions with the twin-motor powertrain now get an 82-kWh battery pack, up from 78 kWh in the previous model. Charging speeds now reach 205 kW, a slight improvement over the earlier version’s 200-kW max speed.

The range is also up for 2025, reaching 296 miles in the single-motor variant and 260 miles in the dual-motor configuration, an increase of three and six miles, respectively. While those aren’t class-leading numbers, they’re decent for a vehicle that started life with a gas powertrain and was retrofitted with electric power. That said, making room for the battery packs did cut into interior space a bit, especially in the back seat and cargo area.

Pricing for the 2025 Volvo EX40 single-motor model starts at $52,500 before destination. Stepping up to the dual-motor variant pushes pricing to $60,750. Both models are cheaper for the new year, with price cuts of more than $1,000 for each.
