VW Owners Will Be Able To Use Tesla Superchargers Starting this Summer

Volkswagen EV owners will soon be able to charge on Tesla’s vaunted Supercharger network. The automaker recently announced that it expects to have an official VW adapter by June or July this year, at which point owners could begin using the Tesla chargers.

Mark Gillies, VW Group of America’s director of public relations, told PC Mag, “We get access to the network in June/July, when we have an official VW adapter.” The publication previously reported that things would kick off in March, but revised that projection after hearing from Gillies.

We don’t know how much the VW adapter will cost or if there will be any delays, as there have been with other automakers’ adapters, including Ford. Volkswagen joins nearly every other major automaker in its move to adopt the Tesla charging standard. Currently, vehicles from companies like Ford, Nissan, and GM require an adapter to use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), but some have promised to ship vehicles with NACS ports starting soon.

Tesla’s Supercharger network is easily one of its most impactful innovations, offering a superior experience and a generally higher reliability rate than the sea of third-party charging companies out there. That said, Tesla charging stations are already overwhelmingly busy in some regions, and adding thousands of new EVs to the mix will only complicate things for existing owners.
