Will Trent returned with a bang, literally.
Will Trent Season 3 Episode 1 opened with two off-duty cops getting shot at their captain’s BBQ, and that shooting affected almost every main character’s storyline.
Will had been gone for six months, and Faith had been promoted. Naturally, Amanda had Faith and Ormewood team up to solve this case. The two had become close friends and were entertaining to watch.
However, Faith had her work cut out for her since there were rumors of a gang hit against one of the cops, Chester Flynn.
His captain wanted to find the shooter immediately, while Faith wanted first to confront the Piedmont Kings leader, Rafael Wexford.
Faith embodied Law & Order SVU‘s Olivia Benson as she sauntered to Wexford’s house and threw a rock at his window to get his attention. This was her chance to shine; Iantha Richardson played a beautiful part.
Since Faith rarely got the chance to be the boss, it was understandable that she grew impatient when Rafael Wexford insisted on speaking only to Will.
The last few months affected Will, which made him hide away in Tennessee with Betty. He worked as a private eye there but avoided most of his neighbors to avoid getting attached and hurt.
Will has surrounded himself with women, and women often feel betrayed when you lose contact with them. While Amanda tried to handle it the best, she even threw something at him because she missed him, and Will acted nonchalant about seeing her.
What? You thought you could hide forever? I’ve known your every move. Time to come home.
— Amanda
Amanda has always dished out tough love. She tried to be sympathetic, knowing what it cost Will to turn Angie in, but she insisted they needed him at home with this case.
She barely made a dent until she mentioned Rafael Wexford’s name. Will agreed to return to help Amanda but didn’t commit to a timeframe.
Will burnt many bridges while he was gone. Faith had moved into his old office and hired a new GBI agent, played by Douglas Smith. Will was treated like a grunt and merely had a desk.
Faith reacted the same way Amanda did and threw something at Will. Faith has always encouraged Will to confide in her, so naturally, she felt hurt that he took off and didn’t tell her.
She was even more hurt that he only returned because he had a connection to Rafael Wexford, another thing he didn’t tell her.
Naturally, Will knew Rafael Wexford from foster care. Most of his friends were from that period.
However, that fight was priceless. It seemed like something brothers would do more than mortal enemies. While it was a violent fight, they taunted each other with personal barbs that only close friends would know.
Ramon Rodriguez directed Will Trent Season 3 Episode 1, and this fight exhibited humor and violence. It was one of the best parts as viewers evaluated what dirt the men had on each other.
Before things escalated, Rafael’s grandmother entered, and the viewers learned years ago that Will stayed with Rafael and his grandmother. We don’t know why yet, but Will felt indebted to them.
While he knew that Rafael wasn’t perfect, he believed that Rafael wouldn’t kill a cop, so he was determined to prove his innocence and that it was a rival gang responsible.
Even though Agent Gross (Douglas Smith) worked at the GBI, Faith partnered with Michael Ormewood, leaving Agent Gross stuck with Will.
Faith and Michael seemed so natural together, making me wonder how often they had worked together over the last few months.
They seemed at ease, with Michael confiding how worried he was that the cop shooting and case would give Gina leverage to win custody of the kids.
Michael knew Faith was only concerned about the case, so he brought her a snack and insisted she eat it before confronting the suspect.
Losing his wife softened Michael. He has become a better dad and a better partner. While I eventually hope he and Angie partner up again, I also enjoyed seeing him and Faith work together.
Faith kept her calm as she sauntered into Lincoln Sterling’s office. She had a history with him, so she chatted with him as he insisted Rafael Wexford lied.
Lincoln Sterling played his cards wrong if he thought he could hit on Faith because she clobbered him with his golf club. You don’t mess with her.
Michael also found several stolen Ziveban cars matching the getaway cars. The duo thought things led to the Grovepark Boys, but Chester Flynn’s wife suddenly became suspicious since he left money to several other women.
How did Chester get involved in this?
The Season 3 premiere didn’t focus much on Angie, but we saw that she earned security guard detail at a ritzy estate neighborhood.
The episode suggested that Franklin and Michael stood by her and were concerned with how she’d handle Will’s return.
Frankin tried the loving, supportive approach while Michael peppered Angie with Intel about Chester. The problem was that while she didn’t think Chester would cheat on his wife, Angie no longer trusted her instincts.
After Will turned her in and caused her to lose her family, she started doubted everything. She knew she got off easy without jail, and Michael agreed.
I’ve always enjoyed their friendship. They’ve supported each other through everything. I’d prefer them to stay close, platonic friends and partners, but I wouldn’t oppose something more.
Will and Marion’s first meeting was amusing. As Gina Rodriguez teased, Marion Alba was unaware that Will was dyslexic and said something wrong.
As the new ADA, she didn’t want to divulge any information that Chester Flynn shared with her, but she grew intrigued by Will as he accidentally shared his life story with her.
Will often lived in black and white, so Marion seemed fascinated that he would arrest the love of his life. She told him that Chester didn’t share much, but she suspected one of the cops was dirty, and she was involved in a case against the other gang, the Grovepark Boys.
Rafael Wexford confessed as they were comparing notes, putting a kink in that plan. The department wanted to close the case, but Will was convinced his friend wouldn’t confess unless he was forced to.
Unfortunately, he was correct, and they found a photo of Rafael’s daughter with tape over her mouth. No wonder he confessed. The hunt is on to prove corrupt cops are trying to frame a gang leader. It looked like Will might be back for good.
That Will Trent Season 3 premiere took us on a roller coaster. We’re excited to learn more about Will’s connection to Rafael Wexford and why he feels he owes his old friend.
Digging into Will’s past always brings complications, but we love these character arcs.
