Will Trent Season 3 Episode 5 Review: An Ode to Mothers and Daughters

Mother-and-daughter relationships are the most complicated.

Some hurt and resentment lasted 20 years between Faith and her mother. However, when her mom was kidnapped in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 5, Faith realized how much she loved Evelyn and hoped she could say that.

This installment showcased Faith Mitchell’s ability to lead a case and balance the line between a worried daughter and a proactive detective. Iantha Richardson was at her best here.

Intense Mother and Daughter Dynamics Led to Faith’s Guilt When Evelyn Was Kidnapped

Evelyn and Faith were still as tense as they were the last time she visited in Will Trent Season 1. When she arrived, her mom started criticizing her new condo decor, and things worsened from there.

Faith could barely hang out with Amanda and Will before her mom called because she saw the neighbor do something suspicious. Faith became annoyed that her mom bothered her at work, but she’ll likely eat those words later.

Mothers and daughters can sling accusations like the best of them, and the Mitchell women were no exception.

Faith: You never listen. You’ve only ever wanted for me what you wanted for yourself.

Evelyn: A career, a home, a family. Those are bad things now?

I was shocked that Evelyn said that she would’ve had more options if Faith hadn’t been a teenage mom. This episode crammed every bit of Mitchell family dysfunction from the books they could.

(Wilford Harewood/ Disney)

Usually, Evelyn was polite, though, and Faith’s brother, Zeke, shouted these hateful words.

Poor Faith. After things ended so badly with her mother, she felt horrible when there were cops outside her house, and her mom was missing.

She knew her mom would’ve tried to fight back and failed.

Initially, Faith feared she would fail her mother again, but Will told her to use that voice to motivate them and find the creep who took her. He understood since he used to hear Paul Campano’s voice.

A Past Murder and Evelyn’s Cop Intuition Helped to Solve the Case

Faith never assumed an old murder would lead to a kidnapping case. She was around dead bodies frequently.

Michael Cole died in the bathtub, and everyone assumed it was a suicide, except his brother Stacy.

He insisted there was something off with the building manager, Juanita, and sure enough, two men abducted Evelyn and Juanita.

Evelyn kept hearing Faith’s voice, and she used her cop’s intuition to recognize that Juanita was working with the men, but she hadn’t given them the rare coin they wanted yet.

Juanita endangered the mission when she led them to a cop’s house.

Evelyn and Faith proved they were badasses by the clues Evelyn left and how Faith kept smashing collectibles until Tucker revealed Juanita’s plan and gave up Scotty. Don’t get in the way of an angry female.

(Zac Popik/Disney)

Typically, Faith follows the rules — but don’t mess with those she loves, or she can become scary.

Faith: It’s my mother. She’s the most important thing to me in this world. So, I’m going to need you to look at me when I tell you this. I will destroy everyone and every single thing you care about if you don’t tell me where my mother is.

Will Trent Season 3 Dove Into Refreshing Character Arcs

Will Trent Season 3 is off to a fabulous start, featuring several in-depth character arcs.

The two-part season premiere focused on Will’s state of mind as he attempts to repair several of his relationships.

At first, Will needed to remember why he wanted to work in law enforcement, but then his spark returned.

( Wilford Harewood/ Disney)

Will Trent then focused on Angie and why she was still reckless and passionate about helping survivors.

In that way, Angie won’t change. It’s ingrained in her personality, just like Will sees things in black and white.

However, Angie matured by refusing to give John a job referral. After hearing his history, she wanted nothing to do with him, which was healthier for her.

We’ve finally dug deeper into Faith’s character and seen how she excels as a leader. She doesn’t need to be second in command.

Hopefully, she’ll get to lead more cases.

I’m unsure if they’ll head into an Amanda or a Michael character arc next. Michael is struggling with his divorce, while Amanda is adapting to raising a teenager.

A Peek Inside the Mitchell Family History Proved Illuminating

(Zac Popik/Disney)

I suspected we would see flashbacks of a younger Evelyn, but I was pleasantly surprised they focused on her relationship with a teenage Faith and Jeremy’s birth.

Years ago, Evelyn struggled to balance her professional and personal life, and Faith became pregnant.

Faith was terrified to tell her mother and assumed, based on her mother’s reaction, that her mom was ashamed of her.

She felt she and Jeremy never measured up, and that’s why it was so critical that Faith remembered that her mom encouraged her through the birth and even encouraged her to keep the baby, promising to support her.

(Wilford Harewood/ Disney)

Faith remembered Evelyn’s love and begged her mom to breathe when she found her in the storage unit.

While both women had many regrets, it was refreshing that they could play cards and laugh in a hotel room. It was the closest we had seen them. Evelyn has always loved Faith but wants better for her than her life.

Faith raised Jeremy similarly but has recently backed off after their near-death experience at the wedding and seeing how excited he was mixing music instead.

I loved that Evelyn admitted that Faith and Jeremy were the best part of her life. Hopefully, he’ll appear again soon.
